I am new to machine embroidery and would like to make my grandchildren pillow slips. How do I embroider on them without the backside getting caught without having to take the seam out? I there an easy way to remedy this problem?

I have made many pillowcases for my grandchildren but have not used ready made ones. I assume you want to embroider ready mades. The only way I can see not to catch the back would be to hoop the front fabric and fold the back up as far as it will allow you tobehind the hoop and pin it out of the way. This should free a fair amount for you to embropider. The only other way would be to unstich one side as you mentioned.
If you want to make them from scratch,a s I do becasue I can custom them for each person, I have found alink that may be helpful. Good luck! http://www.annthegran.com/cs/blogs/j...y-jumbles.aspx

Hi, Sue. Welcome to the group! The only thing I might add to Sharon's directions is that I often use large hair clips (plastic ones with a spring) to keep the extra fabric (from the back side) out of the stitching area. Let us know how it works out for you. Cathy

If you hoop the stabilizer on it's own and then tack down the part of the slip you want to embroider on with hand tacking stitches or pins (as long as you are not in danger of hitting them with the needle) you should be able to gather the rest of the slip out of the way. REMEMBER to stay with the machine at all times! The vibrations can shake things loose if you're not careful.
      Good luck!

And,,,,, keep checking it while you stitch out the design
to make sure than as the hoop moves here or there, it
doesn't accidently catch some fabric under it ....

Sue, I agree with Ginny, all have provided excellent suggestions. I too embroidery ready made pillow slips and have not had a problem.

      Welcome, Sue,
You've rec'd some great answers if you are asking about embroidering on ready-mades. However, I embroider on fabric and then sew the pillowcase. The easiest way I've found is at this URL:
      http://www.ehow.com/how_5056270_make...s-minutes.html
(The pictures are little small, but if you click on them, they pop open BIG.)

As the instructions say it really is less than 30 minutes to sew! It usually takes me longer to do the embroidery, counting the time to download the design, cut & hoop the stabilizer, choose embroidery thread; upload the design to my embroidery machine and stitch. Sometimes, while one design is embroidering, I'm busy finishing the sewing on another machine.

The other reason I recommend these directions so highly is because the inside seam joining the hem and the body is very neatly finished; much like a French seam. I posted this link on another part of the Forum, but I didn't know if you had seen it there.

      Hope this helps,
      Susan

Cathy, wish I had read your suggestion about the hair clips before I started embroidering on my granddaughter's dress. You guessed it. I caught part of the dress in the design. Several hours later, I finished picking out those tiny, tiny stitches and was able to finish the design. Great suggestion. Thanks Dreama

Dreama I think many of us have at least 2 good seam rippers in our sewing room and possibly a very sharp, small razor knife! Also a bar of soap for those extra tiny stitchs; to wash our mouth out after a bunch of naughty words

LOL I think your cat is as much a SiCKie as the rest of us! It's nice to have 'someone' to share your hobby!

I have to put my two Cats, Tabitha and Sebastian in a closed room while I use my Embroidery Machine. For some reason they want to attack the frame as it moves. Now you talk about having to rip out stitches after a cat has stopped the frame from moving.

I have four Chihuahua's that like to race/chase through my sewing room with one generally hitting the foot control and turning off the ME!! I just have to hit the go button again after I yell at the 'kids'

I have some coordinating left over material that I can make a few pillow slips out of. Thanks for the site and the idea.
