Very good article , thanks for taking the time to explain this topic.
However, often it says I can not give scales because I must
spread rep around, or i can only give so much rep in a day and must
wait 24 hours.
What are Rep Points?
They’re fun.
When you look at a post, you see a name on the left. On the right, you’ll see a person’s Join Date, their Location, the number of Posts they’ve made, and their Rep Power, along with a little box, or several little boxes, below.
Rep Points are reputation points. You get them when someone clicks on the scales in the heading line of your post.
The heading line is located above the name line. It contains a number of things. On the left of the heading line, above the name, is when the post was made. This might be 23 minutes ago, 2 hours ago, 4 days ago, 6 weeks ago, etc. On the right of the heading line you’ll find a # and a number behind it. This is the number of the posts in that particular thread. To the right of that are the scales.
The scales are what you click to give rep points. When you click the scales, a little dialogue box will appear with Approve or Disapprove. Choosing Disapprove gives negative points - takes away points - and choosing Approve gives positive points. It’s nice to type a reason for giving the points – or taking them away – by typing a message in the box. It’s also good to sign it. However, the person who receives the rep points will know who sent them because the system is currently set to automatically list that person’s name on the User CP – the User Control Panel.
Generally, someone will click the scales on a post when they believe that post has been helpful, encouraging, supportive, or informative to them. Rep Points are awarded as green points and add the number of points to the recipient’s rep points as the point-giver has in rep points. Negative points are half of what the point-giver has in Rep Points and add to a red point. Green is good, and red is bad.
You can view your points, and the the point-givers of the list of points, as well as the posts that earned you rep points from others by clicking on User CP at the top of the page on the toolbar. It is the first item on the toolbar, followed by All Albums, FAQ, Community, Calendar, New Posts, Search, Quick Links, and Log Out. The User CP will have the list of New Subscribed Threads and the Latest Reputation Received listed, as well as Your Control Panel (on the left).
If you place your cursor over the little green boxes under Rep Power on a post, you can see a cute little saying that Cutiepie has added to make it even more fun. These little sayings vary with point levels.
The little green squares correspond to Rep Point level. The system does it automatically however it is programmed.
Rep Power – that little number behind the words on the right side of each post – is how many positive points you give to someone else when you click on their scales. Their point total will change by that much when you click their scales. The Rep Power changes according to a number of factors, such as how many points you have, how long you have been a member of the forum, etc. When you give a negative mark to someone, their Rep Points are dropped by half the number of Rep Power you have – AND they see who gave them the negative points.
As part of the system programming, the little blocks change colors - from dark green to light green - as Rep Power grows.
So, if you like what someone has said, or how they have said it; if you appreciate the information someone has given you; if someone has made you laugh or smile or just made your day, or if someone has been supportive, wise, helpful to you or otherss in any way – then remember to click their scales in appreciation and drop a little note in the box to tell them why. It’s nice to be appreciated, and the favor may return to you at a later date.

I love your explanation! I also love your quote!
Well thank you for explaining this. I happened to ask someone what it was today and she directed me here. I did not understand what people meant when they mentioned their "silver scales." I clicked on their web page links.(it sounds so dumb admitting it).
I discovered them yesterday after deciding to "learn" the forum better and clicked them open, then positive(s).Did not notice any comment part.I went across the whole tool bar to "learn" it.(maybe a bit too fast).
Ok..time to keep the glasses clean from grandbabies drool and/or get a stronger pair. Both actually.
Chemo brain sneaking back ..no excuse .Sorry. I now understand this.
Luna
Luna, never a dumb question..I usually sit here praying somebody else will ask a question so I don't have too. I found an area about the rep points and finally the light bulb went on. HUGZ to ya!
quiltersblock, I learn something new everyday here. I never knew about the little saying when you put your cursor on the rep blocks. You have helped explain things very clearly to me and others, many times. Thank you! HUGZ to ya!
This is an excellent explanation. Thank you for taking your time to type all that information.

Ginny, I have a question about points now too. I have my first light green bar. I thought I understood how many rep points it took to get a dark green bar. But that doesn't seem to work with the light green bars. What causes you to get a second light green bar?
