So even if you do not live in a town you do not really need a car (at least not every adult in a family). The same I have experienced in the Paris area. But of course in Scandinavia or the Spanish highland things are different.
I never in my life owned a car - would cost too much for nothing to gain. Within Vienna I'm ALWAYS faster by using public transport than individual car. AND I have a good feeling that this way I'm not adding to global warming.

It's a LONG road that leads us to where we end up. - so many factors go into each decision, and when we get there it is hard to see why.
The home I have now suits me very well - but I would love to be able to pick it up and transport it 'elsewhere'. The people in my immediate surroundings have very little in common with me, but I am lucky that I have friends that I have made along the way, that are there when I need to 'touch base'.
I am also delighted that continents are no longer a barrier to friendship, and there is always someone to chat to somewhere around the world, no matter how 'un-civilized' are the hours you keep. (I am an insomniac as well as everything else!)

When we retired we decided to move into town. We spent a lot of time working out the exact location that best suited us.We wanted to be within walking distance of everything we needed & we are. We designed the house & to my way of thinking it is perfect. Of course the sewingroom went on the plans first & everything else had to fit around it. The size of town blocks was a bit of a constraint but we managed.

I forgot to say I was lucky with neighbours too. Two of them are sewing nuts like me & we are converting a third!

How did you decide on a place? Did you visit and stay in many places first? How long did it take to make a decision?

We lived out of Tamworth on a placce & didn't want to leave the area,so we knew Tamworth pretty well. We'd holidayed in lots of places but always felt Tamworth was the best place for us.

I have the same feeling about where I live. I love "this old hotel" all the space and the way we have created each space just for us and our way of living. I love our company being a flight down the elevator commute. We are right down town so I can walk anywhere easily if we need to. When it snowed so much this year we could walk to the grocery, the pharmacy, church, etc. However, I do choose to mostly shop in the neighboring city most of the time for the selection and the privacy. Little towns are rummor havens and if you buy hemoroid medicine half of town knows it before you even get to the check out stand. lol.

It is especially hard on my dh. He hasn't a thing in common with the people here. He grew up as a well-to-do city boy, attended The seminary (Catholic), was the head of (paid staff) of one of the largest state wide non-profit organizations, and was responsible for hosting and organizing a huge trade show in the Seattle King Dome, hob nobbing with governors and the most elite restaurant owners from around the state. Here we are in farm country and good ol' boys. He just can't click with the guys around here. It was very lonely for me here too until I discovered the Martha Pullen forum and this group. It has made all the difference for me. Love that somebody is always awake somewhere in the world.

As far as supplies I buy a lot on line too. I do have a good Viking Store in the neighboring town, but to buy fabric for much of anything but quilting is hard. I pick up a lot when I travel or when I go to see my big girls (32 and 34) in Seattle.

Even though we are out in the dingles (only town in the county) we don't have a car per person. We were just talking about getting a car for our DD who will be driving soon. She said she'd rather share with us and have a grand piano! I don't know what kind of car she was thinking we had in mind, but I'll tell you it would be a lot cheaper than a grand piano. lol DH said we probably should be thinking about getting her a grand since she had trouble practicing with her last piano piece because she didn't have a grand to practice on at home, spinets have no half peddle. I guess that means no cruise for us this year. lol I try to remember she is probably the one who will change my diaper or pick my nursing home when I am old. lol

The problem with small towns is that everyone knows your business. The good thing about small towns is that everyone knows your business - so if you forget, someone can tell you what it is you're supposed to be doing. lol

I grew up in a tiny village where everyone knew you business. Tamworth is small enough for you to know most people, but large enough to give you some privacy. The perfect place really.

I grew up in the same small town in MN. Small towns, while each has its own quirk, are pretty much the same wherever you go. My dad used to say that the "nuts just stand out a little more and it seems there are more of them. Over the years I've heard about the same thing from others who grew up in small towns. For me, it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live to there.
I know where Tamworth is located - between Sydney and Brisbane. But what is the population now? When a cousin visited Australia a couple years ago, the population was around 40,000 - give or take a few thousand.

I grew up in a small town of only 1,200 people. My high school graduation there was only 90 kids and we were the biggest class the school system had. After I got married and had children, we moved to a small town to raise them. To me it's a better life for kids growing up. They don't have as much or as big of pressures. But then I left my husband and moved my daughter with me. My son was 17 and didn't want to change schools in his senior year. My daughter had to get raised in a larger city. St Petersburg Florida. It's very different and she had a hard time groing up. She made lots of mistakes and is now paying for them. She is getting counciling and she is really trying. I just hope my grandson can hold his own and not bow to pier pressure. He is such a good boy, never gets into trouble and is very quiet, doesn't run all over the place unless he's outside. He does well in school. He's 11. Sorry I probably gave too much information, but when I get talking I just can't seem to stop. I'll shut up now. Bye

It's only "too much" if you feel it's too much. People will find relationships and friendships as deep or shallow in cyber space as they do in the "real world." Comfort level varies as well. Everyone is different and interacts differently. When it comes down to it, people are more alike than different.

I hope things improve for your daughter and she turns the past into a positive future for herself and her son. And I hope your grandson escapes the tribulations that befell your daughter.

My dad used to say that it takes an entire village to raise a child, and I think that applies whether it's a town of one thousand or one million. Whether a situation with a kid has been positive or negative, we try to step up and view it as an opportunity to guide and set an example - unknowing of how much negative influence a kid has in his/her life, at least we can be a positive one.

I agree friendships grow with time and we can limit our friendships or let them ride the way of time. Some coming and going and some lasting. It all depends on a lot of different things. Siobhan
