Hi
What is "crack" software?
I think it is illegal software.
Elaine
This would be software that can be used without a dongle, or the correct passwords. Many people work hard at beating ligitimate companies passwords and then offer the software at a reduced price.
I did not know they sold digitizing software that did not have a dongle.
But I am new and just learning the ropes.

No crack pots here!
I'm confused, how do I know if it is illegal? I use my dongle for the designs that I get from DBS and add lettering too but I have never sold or given away my saved things.

A good rule of thumb is if it sounds too good to be true, it very well might be illegal. For instance, if you found someone who wanted to sell you a lifetime membership for Designs By SiCK for $50, that would be too good to be true. Or if someone were to try and sell you software that you know sells elsewhere for $1000, and they only wanted $85, it is probably "cracked" (as in the security measures have been cracked, and it can be used without the proper security being followed).
Likewise, if you were to try and sell or give away your designs that you got from DBS and added lettering to, that would be illegal. You don't own the copyright, so have no right to do anything but use the designs yourself. You can sell/give away items you have sewn on, but not the designs (in digital format) themselves.
If in doubt, ask questions. If it is legal, your questions will be answered clearly and you won't receive pressure about it. If it is not legal, you will either not get answers to your questions or you will get evasions or maybe even bad attitude.
I have a question. If you purchased designs, could you sell them if you removed them from your computer?
"Cracked" or "pirated" means it's an illegal copy. Like if you were making copies of your DVD's and selling them on the internet. Not legal.
"Cracked" usually refers to software, probably because someone "cracked" the code to make it work. Usually when you buy software there's a registration key code you have to enter in when you install it. That is how the program knows you paid for the software. There are people out there who crack that code and then sell illegal copies of the software.
If anyone out there thinks they can get away with using illegal copies of software, they should be warned that many times those programs won't work right and they may even have viruses, spyware or other malicious stuff in it. It's best to leave the illegal stuff to the dumb criminals.
No, Patty. When you purchase designs, you are only purchasing the right to sew them on your machine. You don't really even have the right to alter the designs (aside from perhaps merging them with other designs) and you certainly can not sell them again without the express permission of the copyright owner. Technically, you should even gain permission if you want to resize the design, or delete portions of it, although people rarely do this.
That does not mean that you can't sew them in different colors than the digitizer has picked (I'm adding this because my sister is reading over my shoulder and asked about that). As long as the design remains unchanged digitally, you can pretty much do whatever you want as you sew it.
Thank you for sharing that information. I knew I could not sell them but I am glad to know that If I alter them I should find out from the digitizer if they don't leave instructions if that is allowed. I know sometimes you are given permission to alter or change size but not ever sell them.

Here is a question, can you will your designs to someone. If you have them on a protable Hard drive, can that be willed or given with your machine?

I can not imagine that willing designs would be against the law because you are NOT passing them off as your own work. I gave a disc to someone that had designs on it and did not alter the cover or in any way intone that it was 'mine'. I purchased it and gave it away; the origanal, not a copy.

That is ok only if you remove any of the designs from your computer Teddy. If you keep them and give the original CD or disk to someone that is a no no..
Patty
I bought the designs and never even opened the disc/CD; that should be ok shouldn't it?
