      Default Best form of flattery

They say imitation is the best form of flattery. Does anyone do what I do, see something in a shop and think I can do that. It started with my daughter taking me to see a knitted jacket in a high street retailers. I also have knitting machines, and was told " you can copy that Mum" which I did, but in the colour and yarn that she liked. Since than I have recreated many items both for myself and members of the family. Wish I could make shoes, but miracles take a little longer.

I do that with clothes - look at the stuff in the shops and think I can make that for much less, and in a fabric and size I like. Not having to pay the exhorbitant clothing costs. I did a course ten years ago on making reversible jackets, and the lady said to us - steal with your eyes. I'm still doing it.

You have a talent when you can recreate a knitted garment. I have been learning to knit and it is not going too well.

Have you thought of crochet some say that it is easier then knitting. I do both, fortunately. Both have their merits.

I like crochet, I never did get into knitting. I like that I am working with one stitch at a time, istead of a whole long needle full. Good luck!! I know my friend knits but never got into crochet, so it all depends on what fits,.....sometimes both! Joyce

      Talking

I'm sitting here chuckling/smiling .... years (eons actually) ago I can recall going to a high end department store here locally, my mom seeing, oh say, a fancy schmancy pot holder - she purchased it, brought it home, carefully used her seamripper, took the stiches out, make a pattern using a paperbag (back then there was no such thing as plastic bags at grocery stores). Stitched the item back (better than what it was to begin with) and took it back to the store !

I still imitate just about everything. My attitude has always been if someone made it and it is in a store for sale I can make and I usually do. I have also made clothing without patterns but only for my family cause I know their body type and size.

One of my mottoes is 'if I can make it cheaper I will make it' That goes for sewing, knitting, crochet, ......(I even made my son a kilt with sporan, velvet jacket, hose and gillies (Highland dance shoes) when he was small and took Highland dancing lessons (between the ages of eight to ten). - He will not thank me for remembering that but he did look splendid, and won quite a few medals.

My favorite memory is when I saw a wonferful set of curtains that I could not afford so I opened the package, measured, traced and made notes (while the store assistant glared at me) then went home and did it without a pattern. Couldn't afford the pattern either at the time. I make most of my clothes, kids clothes and sew for a lot of people. I even embroider a lot of the clothes that the hospital staff wears to work.

I just love to go to those high end stores and take notes..they won't let you take pix, but..a pencil and paper work..OK my sketching isn't great, but it will remind me of detail if I see too much in one day

I just love to copy things that I see, but for myself only. I am always worried, even if I give the item as a gift, that the copyright police will come and take me away.

I usually change the designs s little so I don't have to worry about copyrights..unless they are for me or my family

I like finding people with my attitude, as I am always saying if it has been made someone had to do it. We all have a talent/skill I think it is a shame that more people don't make use of theirs. Do you ever get fed up hearing, " I can't do it " when they haven't even tried. My son has a saying- Take the T off of can't and then you can.

My answer is "really, have you tried" and "you can't fail if you don't try!" I took my own advise and shot for the moon and earned my RN degree at the age of 40!!!

Well done Deborah, It brought to mind what my Nan used to say- "When man on earth does his best, the Angels in Heaven can do no more" So lets keep up the good work and keep trying. I am increasingly amazed at how much I don't know and how much I find I can learn and do.

Makes a mockery of you can't teach an old dog new tricks, I really believe you are never too old to learn, but it pays not to forget the old ways either. sometimes a needle and thread get where the machine can't.
