help!!!!

can someone please help me? I have bought one of the ped basic card writer things for the emboidery machine that I have but according to the lady at the store I need to learn how to split patterns on this in order to use it with the machine that I own. does any one know how to split a pattern?

First, what type of machine do you have? What size sewing field does it have? If your machine has at least a 4x4 inch field (which is a really very common size), you won't need to split most of the designs from the site here. Splitting is only necessary when you want to sew designs that are larger than your machine's field. Please give us a bit more information, and we can do our best to help you enjoy your machine to the fullest!

the machine that I have is a brothers SE2700 series. when I use the ped basic to download a 5x7 pattern it tells me that I can not use this. I have the larger hoop for the machine but it will not recognize the card when I insert it in to the machine if it has a 5x7 pattern on it. There are alot of adorable patterns here that are that size and I can not use them until I learn how to split the pattern. so if some one can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

you need editing software. you delete half of the design (just from your workspace not perm) stitch that half, then go back delete the half you stitched, and stitch out the remainder. there are also programs specificaly to split designs. how big is your hoop size?

If you have the Brother SE270D, the Maximum Embroidery Field is 4"x4", according to the Brother website:

"Maximum Embroidery Field" means the machine can stitch out designs up to 4"x4"; unless the design is edited on your computer PRIOR to uploading into the machine.

As Cutie Pie said, 4"x4" is a very standard size. However, larger designs (i.e. 5"x7") would require modification. It's the "embroidery field", not the size of the hoop that determines what designs the machine will accept.

For example, say you have a design called "JuneBug" and it's 5"x7". The SE270D would not accept the design. But, with embroidery software, the design could be split into a couple of parts: "June" and "Bug". Load "June" into the machine and embroider. Then, load "Bug" in to the machine and embroider.

(I think I may be able to anticipate the next question: what about that 5"x7" hoop? One answer is that it minimizes re-hooping. So, using the "JuneBug" example, the "June" and "Bug" would probably align more easily if you didn't have to re-hoop.)

Hope this helps. Your dealer ("the lady at the store") can show you in detail how to split designs. Some things are so much easier when someone walks you through it in person -- at least for me.

OK, Junebug, as ScreenBags said, it is the embroidery field that determines how large of a design you can sew, and not the hoop. The physical restrictions on the machine can not be altered (no matter how much we wish it were so). Therefore, it is the designs that must be altered, and this is done using editing software.

There are many different types available (for varying amounts of money) and fortunately, several of them offer demo versions that you can download and try before you buy. If your dealer offers a specific type of software and also offers classes in how to use it, that is ideal. If not, there are many resources available on the Internet to help you learn.

Do a Google search for machine embroidery editing software and you will get lots of results to get you started.

One thing that I feel I should caution you about is just "shrinking" the designs to fit. That can lead to disaster, since the stitch count won't change and so there will be far too many stitches in the design area and you will frequently break your thread, your needles, or both.

you have all been so very helpfull. I am new to all of this so it is nice to have a place to go and talk with people who have knowledge. My mother is 68 and this is actualy for her. she is trying to learn how to do all of this on the machine. so I get her as much knowledge as I can.
