My mom made hubby a large rice bag (terry cloth) to use as a hot or cold compress and he loves it. Now, he has decided that they would make great 'stocking stuffers' for members of his family.I plan on using muslin for the inner bag and have this wild idea of cutting a light weight polyester fleece blanket as the outer cover. These are very inexpensive right now.
Does anyone have other suggestions? Comments?

That sounds like a really nice gift idea. How thoughtful! I really like the idea of the fleece. Cuddly soft and easy to wash. Did you plan to ME anything on the bags? They would be cute with little "boo-boo" sayings or designs.Either way they are a good gift idea.
Uncooked rice, Wheat, Feed corn, Buckwheat hulls, Barley, Oatmeal, Beans, Flax seed, Cherry pits.
Rice (or other grain listed above) and a mix ofried lavender,Marjoram,Betony ,Rose petals,Cloves ,Rosemary.
You can also add the following to the above for a soothing fragrant heating pad: Spices, herbs, essential oils.
Ideas: lavender, rose petals, ground cloves, nutmeg, ginger, rosemary, cinnamon, peppermint oil, crushed mint
If using: Mix herbs, spices and essential oil with choice heating pad filler (such as rice) and let sit in a sealed container for a few days (occasionally stirring). This will help set and distribute the fragrance a bit.
Thanks for the ideas with other stuffing and fragrances, Tracy.
Sue, I was thinking of just putting something simple on the bag. Somewhere I think I have a bandaid design.
Never give up, never surrender.
Love the bandaid design idea La Cole. As they say "A bandaid fixes everything!"

Sewing is just another way to show your love
They sound like a wonderful idea, I could really use one right now, my neck and shoulder are killing me along with this migrain that I have had since Sunday.

Pennie, my sympathy with your migraine - a hug on the way for you!
Sorry about those of you having headaches. Used to get them frequently, but it seems that they stopped once my kids all left home.LOL
La cole, our local wellness center recommends using dried corn in your bags, as the kernels seem to hold the heat longer.
I read somewhere that you can put black pepper and bay leaves in the stuffing mix to prevent grains from developing bugs.
Hey la-cole I just remember something very importance about fleece it has a fine melt thread in it. I know because my seger blades became very dal after sewing the baby blanket on it and call speedy lock white the lady there toll me about it.
La cole like the idea of fleece for heating, but not sure how it would work as a cold compress.

The rice bag sounds so nice, but how do you heat it?
