sounds pretty good to me, most of us eat banana splits for the topings anyway, you won't miss the ice cream. Thanks for sharing.![]()
Hi everyone! Well it is camping time again. Here is a recipe that a family friend gave us way back in 1963 for our camping cuisine. I shared this recipe with a co-worker who was taking a large troupe of Boy Scouts on a camp out for a week. He asked me what would be good to take for the guys to fix for dessert, so I gave him this recipe. Seven days and 25 Boy Scouts later, he sent me a huge 'thank you' note and said the Campfire Banana Splits were a hit and is on their permanent camping menu.
Campfire Banana Splits
Aluminum Foil
Bananas
Hershey Candy Bars or what ever chocolate candy bar you like.
Mini-Marshmallows or big Marshmallows cut into smaller pieces
Pineapple Ice Cream topping
Caramel Ice Cream Topping or caramel candy cut into small pieces
Strawberry Ice Cream Topping
Or your favorite Jams and fruit preserves.
Here's How You make them.
Slit the banana the full length of it; do not remove the peel.
Carefully loosen the peel from the banana on each side of the slit.
Wedge pieces of chocolate between the banana and its peel. Add a small amount of each topping in each banana and finish with cut up marshmallows.
Tear off a large piece of aluminum foil and place the banana on it. Loosely cover the banana and seal the foil so that nothing escapes or leaks out while cooking.
Place the bananas over the hot coals on your campfire for about 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Remove from fire, put on a sturdy plate and carefully open the foil to expose the banana. Be careful of getting a steam burn. The chocolate and marshmallows should be melted and gooey, if not re-seal and put back on them over the hot coals for a couple more minutes. Remove foil from banana and if you like, remove the peel. Eat while hot. Enjoy!![]()
