Default does anyone have this same problem?

I have been sewing for years now, and I still have a problem applying bias binding. Seems I can get one side of it done neatly, but when I go to sew the other side, I always seem to get it messed up. It never turns out for me. Does anyone have a easy way to apply bias binding? I am doing the binding on potholders right now?

I have a terrible time sewing on the backside by machine. I usually only do the front by machine, then I turn the binding to the back and press it and stitch it by hand.

On one of my recent projects, I sewed the binding to the fronts (six or eight table runners, I can't remember - needed to get them done in a hurry) and then after I pressed it around to the back, I tacked it down with Steam-a-Seam 1/4" tape. I had to be pretty careful as I applied it, but when I was done, I was able to stitch in the ditch on the fronts of the runners and the binding was sewn to the backs with a reasonably even 1/16" edge-stitching.

I like doing hand work, and I like being able to make the stitching almost invisible, so that's how I would do anything that will be seen on both sides, like quilts or pot-holders. But, try that Steam-a-Seam tape - or Wonder-Under, Stitch Witchery - whichever you can get in the 1/4" size - it's really wonderful stuff!

Hi, I have used a little line of glue on the back side after sewing the binding on the front side. I let the glue dry and then stitch it down from the back side. It also helps me with the corners. Good luck I know how frustrating it can be.

Try sewing the binding on to the back first and then on the front with a decorative stitch that sews on the binding and the potholder...like a zig zag stitch. Works for me when I'm doing a quick job.

I started using wash-away wonder tape. It is two sided 1/4 inch tape that washes away when you wash the item. I use it for bias tape and regular quilt binding (using the BHG method where you fold binding in half, sew it on the front the fold over - I put the tape on the back and then stitch in the ditch from the front and it is pretty even that way on the back). It is a lot less messy than doing using a glue stick (which is what I did before because I don't have the time to hand stitch on quilt binding).

I always thought that it was just me and my poor sewing skills. Now, I'm happy to know that it's a common problem and MIGHT give it another try.

I was taught to sew it on the front and hand stitch it on the back. I thought that's the way everyone did it. But recently women in my guild are saying if you put the tape on correctly on the front you can machine stitch in the ditch on the front and it will catch the back. Well let me tell you, I have tried and tried and I can't do it. I think now reading this thread if I use Wonder Under tape it just might work for me. I don't mind hand stitching the back bias tape. It's my quiet time and everyone knows not to bother me. Boy have I got my family snowed. hehehe

I pin my so that it stays put. I know they have a bias binding foot for that but i have not seen one in many years.

Getting one of those binding attachments to work is a feat in itself! LOL!

I know it probably just takes a lot of practice, but I had no luck at all using it to bind the edges of eight placemats. I used purchased binding for those, so I know it was exactly the right size.

Getting the quilted placemat fabric into the slot and keeping it there was the first hurdle. The bias binding kept sliding off the edge and getting itself sewed shut! LOL!

I finally resorted to oldhag's method - just get it on there any way you can and sew over the edge with decorative stitches!

      Better than all that cussin'.....

      Default sewing on bias binding

FYI, I did find a really good tutorial of this subject, it is on you tube "no swearing bias binding"

I tried it and it does work, at least on straight edges, so far

I have always stitched bias binding by machine stitching the top side and hand stitching the back side - thought it was the only way.
I have just checked out the 'no swearing bias binding' on youtube - found it a bit hard to watch but stuck with it and that is definately a way I will be trying next time. Although, I really can't remember any bias binding I have used that have two different widths of fold-down. There are some other very interesting tutorials on that same site - like mitred corners.
