Default Grrrr I am so mad!

Ok remember when I was so thrilled to learn the secret of using permanent markers to hide bobbin showing? Well I had 3 things for Paislee that I had made, 2 Christmas onesies and the pink paisley onesie dress that I had done this on. Even though I had prewashed everything before hand, Aimee got a burst of energy and wshed everything today and those three things, the marker ran all over the place!!! She washed in cold water and the markers were Bic Markit permanent markers. UGH! I cant even begin to tell you how upsetting this is. Why would it do this??

I feel your pride being shaken and don't know why this would happen, Becca. But, it's good information to know before making something for a customer and having it come back. (I have used the Sanford Sharpie without problems.) Is there a way to have Max's tension worked on, too? lol

Oh, Becca, I'm so sorry about the marker ink running. What a terrible shame as I know how hard you worked making all those fabulous things for little Paislee. Using markers on 'bald' spots is a good idea. I have used only Pigma pens and haven't run into a problem (or told there was a problem) but I try to use them only when absolutely necessary.

Thanks girls! I just do not understand how this could happen
LaCole I think my tension and Max's tension are having a battle of the wills!
Ive got a little "blow money" and Im seriously considering stepping up to "SOMETHING" else...some Brother or Babylock so I can stay with my pes files but have at least a 5X7 field. I would LOVE to jump into a quatro. Alas that isnt feasible right now but I am definately looking at upping to something a little bigger.

Becca, I am so very sorry....I would be fighting mad as well if this had happened to me.
Permanent markers are suppose to be permanent...they should not come off in water. The few dot that you placed on the garment should have been pretty much diluted in the water...if at all. Is it possible it was the type of soap used? I have not had this problem, but I use the Sharpie's...
Again, so very sorry to hear your hard work is damaged.

Sorry this happen to you. It lets us all know to prewash our markers before using them on a garment. Something I haven't done.
I also would think permanent markers would be permanent.

Becca, sorry what happened to your items after washing. I only use the Sharpie brand permanent markers and I have never had the ink to run when washed. Normally permanent markers don't wash out of anything. I recently bought the brand you mentioned and I think I will experiment and see what happens.

I think Skipper meant to try the markers and see if they will run before using them on a project/garment, not actually trying to wash the markers themselves (the thought makes me giggle, however). I too am sad that your lovely work got damaged.

Aimee may want to try spraying the part where the ink ran with some Formula 409 cleaner. I used that to get India ink out of a red sweatshirt that had been hand embroidered. I was amazed, but you can't even tell that nearly a half bottle got spilled on the front of my shirt. Again, test it on a hidden area before use where it would show, but it may just work for her.

How disappointing for this to happen. All your lovely work ruined.

I can just see the markers sitting a bowl of water and detergent, hahahaha.

I would put a splodge of the permanent marker on piece of fabric, let it dry and then throw it in the washing machine (the fabric, not the pen) with a good detergent and see what comes out in the wash.

If the markers have run, I would wash the garments again and see if the ink comes out in the next wash, but only use cold water. perhaps Grandma's Secret Spot Remover (I got mine from Hobby Lobby when I was over in the States this year) I use it on everything that is marked and defies everything else to remove a mark. Got fence paint marks out of pair of shorts using it. I am not guaranteeing anything.

There is also a product on the market made by Dylon which will stop colour bleeding in garments.

I wonder if a hot iron on the reverse would 'set' the ink, as you would with fabric paints and inks?
I have heard somewhere in the past of a product from Dylon that you put in the wash that acts as a 'magnet' for colour runs, that may be a solution to your spoiled items.
(Sorry I'm a bit fuzzy on the details - but Google may give some results.)
I hope you won't give up on trying to save the situation. (Perhaps give it a day before you try, so you are good and calm).
I think I will go and search out the Formula 409 that Cutiepie mentions. It sounds like the sort of product that no home should be without.

I have had permanent markers bleed and it is infuriating. I now use only pigma pens and an occational sharpie. The trick I have discovered it to launder everything with a Shout Color Catcher Sheet. They are miraculous. No more problems of any kind !

Another idea, I just thought of was when I was a nurse, I was forever getting black permanent marker on my uniforms, it can be removed with hairspray.

Thanks for all the tips. Not sure which to try first. LOL!
Sharong, the Shout Color Catcher Sheet Ive never heard of! I assume it should be found with the Shout spray? And will it remove the ink now that its already been washed? Thats my fear is even hairspray wont help now that its been washed. Im afraid its set for life. The Christmas onesies are pretty bad and it would be easier just to redo them probably. The little onesie dress isnt too bad and I am most concerned with saving it since it has socks bow and bib all to match

Yes, I have done that too. DH had a black pen ruin one of his dress Air Force uniform shirt and I was able to soak the area in rubbing alchol and pull it all out! that shirt was $25 about 25 years ago and we sure could not afford to replace it!

My heart goes out to you!! I would be sick and have been on your behalf just reading about your disaster!

Have you seen a dealer/repair person about a fix on your baby or a good cleaning? I will pray that all goes well.

Some fabric markers only become permanent after a fastening procedure; this can either be ironing with a hot iron, or need a special primer. And some are not working on artificial fibres (like polyester - which is the material the embroidery threads are made of). Did you carefully read the instruction sheet?

You can also try, I know this will sound funny but baby wipes remove lots of stains, so does cascade dishwasher detergent, you may have to soak it for a little while. I hope someones helpful hint will work for you.

Be careful with dishwasher detergent. Many of them contain bleaching agents as disinfectants so may also bleach the fabric. I use Dawn Dishwashing liquid on many spots (especially oily ones) on clothing, but highly doubt that it would remove permanent marker. Another idea might be hydrogen peroxide--yup, the same stuff that's in your medicine cabinet. It's outstanding for removing protein stains like gravy or blood--also scorch marks from your white linens.

Yikes! What a bummer for you! So sorry this happened to all your projects you work so hard on. Is it possible the thread is the culprit? I've had tread 'bleed' before in the wash.

This has reminded me of when my Grand-daughter was a toddler (with all the 'interesting' markings that she left all about their house on furniture walls and floor, not to mention people!) My son extolled the virtues of the 'miraculous baby wipe' to all who would stand there long enough to listen! He still has a handy box on standby - long after the 'baby' had need of wiping!
