What suggestions can I get for glueing the backings when stitching bookmarks? I've been using spray craft glue but it gets rather wet and gums the needle.

      Any suggestions please.

I don't know what name brands may be available to you, dhale, but I use Dritz Spray Adhesive. It's specially formulated not to gum up the needle. You may also want to give glue sticks a try. Yup, the same ones that grade school children use for their craft projects.

I like ironing where I have used glue stick before I start stitching. It dries the glue stick without compromising the hold and prevents that gumming up action.

If using a spray adhesive make sure to spray stabilizer just a bit , then place the fabric on it and smooth it out,

Then wait a few minutes for the spray adhesive to dry before stitching on the fabric.
That way the needles do not get gummed up.

The 505 spray adhesive is good.
