Making Patches

Does anyone have some good ideas for making patches to mend children's play pants? I would like to put a simple quick design on it and be able to iron it on and maybe tack it down. The leg is too small to fit on the machine and I would prefer not to take the seam out. Thank you for any help. Ramona

Here is how I make patches to be used instead of sewing directly onto the pants or anything hard to hoop.

These are great, windstar. What fabric do you use and do I detect a satin stitch around the design?

Here is what I do. I stitch my design out on felt. Then I cut the design out leaving a little edge around them. I then cut a square of EZ felt that is half an inch larger than the design and I will stitch the design to the EZ felt using a regular stitch...then I will cut the shape out again leaving a quarter inch all around the design. the quarter inch spacing will give you enough room to stitch the patch to the item or you can glue the patch to whatever item. I usually zig zag stitch the patch to the item if I am sewing it to the item. It is the same concept as the type of patches you put on letterman jackets except these patches are not chenille.

Looks like you can use scissors better than me, windstar. I cannot cut on a line let alone cut at an equidistance around an entire design.

I did a tigger patch yesterday cause I wanted to test out my 4x4 machine since I just had it serviced. I still have to cut it out and mount it on the EZ felt and put it aside for when someone needs a patch. I love to test out my designs this way. Sitting and cutting them is so relaxing. It's a good way to test designs and Sick thread kits. I used Sick brother threads on the tigger I did yesterday.

I had great success with making the patches, but was not happy using a product "Patch Attach". I tried to use this product twice and ended up picking it off and using "Super Fabric Textile Adhesive" by Aleene's. Just to make sure it held, I tacked it down by hand. Ramona

Sounds like a great tip..but what is EZ felt ?

EZ felt is a really stiff felt. You can stitch on it and use it for the note holders the hair barettes etc. It is like a light weight cardboard almost. It comes in squares and you can find it at Micheals and Hobby Lobby where you find the regular felt squares, and it also come in colors. It will say EZ Felt and the squares are a bit larger than the regular felt squares.

Molly I just found your post ..and I am glad I did ! I am looking at making 10 note holders for the bunco girls and this will speed things up alot !!
