Can anyone tell me if you have ever stitched a design on a knitted hat or any home made knitted project? I don't want to ruin the hat if it's not a good idea. Thanks

It doesn't sound like a very good idea to me JJL, because, unless it is knitted with really tiny stitches your design is going to disappear into the wool.
Have you thought about doing the design as a badge/patch and then hand stitching it in position. (Or do something in free standing lace and then attach it)
IF the knitting is REALLY tight you could treat it like you would a towel - and float some water soluble stabilizer on top to hold the stitches above the yarn.

Excellent advise Moto! I too would worry. I would do a cross stitch type design with wool and by hand only. these things are precious and would hate to see it ruined.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I knit very tight, but I think I will try it on a sample square just to see if the design diappear. The fsl or badge is a good idea. Also I never thought of doing a cross stich design. Will practice first. I too was afraid of messing up all the work I but into the hat. This is why I ask all you experts.

I was just about to post a thread about ME and knitting, when I said I better check to see if one similar has started..thanks ladies.
I wasnt to do something on crochet but I thought as much with stitched disappearing. I will have to test out a sample and see.
